Marriage can be so fragile.

Here I go about my favorite book again...stay with me!
While doing our community group study at church we stumbled upon this treasure.
I cannot say it enough how different a man is from a woman. We need completely different things. It's like we speak Portuguese and our husband speaks Dutch. How can we expect marriage to be easy when we do not understand the other language.
Here are 6 things that men need:
Remember CHAIRS!
Which stands for: conquest, hierarchy, authority, insight, relationship, and sexuality.
Ladies, here's what we need:
Remember COUPLE!
This stands for: closeness, openness, understanding, peacemaking, loyalty, and esteem.
All of those look different from what our spouse needs. This book has impacted several marriages that were broken. What "Love and Respect" taught me was the method behind Fireproof and how the daily actions you take within the book show love and respect to your spouse. God will bless this, change hearts, and GIVE MIRACLES! Just when you think it can't happen, it will.
Here's a verse that I love: 1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Phil 2: 1 - 4.
I just signed up at The 40 Day Love Dare to continue ensuring my marriage remains Fireproof. I encourage you to read "Love and Respect" or rent "Fireproof". When we make a promise - especially with our Creator - work to honor it!
Here's an amazing last thought!
I also just found out this movie will be out this year! YAY! http://www.courageousthemovie.com/home

You are wise beyond your years sweet daughter. I love you and am so happy that you and Ryan have found such a wonderful group to be part of at Athens Church.
ReplyDeleteSo true! I think people think marriage is supposed to be easy. Not the case. People have the misconception that we DESERVE the other person's love or respect...you have to earn it- marriage is about give and take. God has some AWESOME promises that come along with marriage, but that means keeping Him first and working on your marriage all the time. We are going to a marriage conference this weekend, and people have asked me why we're going to this when we've only been married for 5 months. To keep it healthy, of course. That's the key. Always put the other person first...(after the Lord of course)
ReplyDeleteOne more thing to add & I'll be quiet...
ReplyDeleteI just have to share this verse. This is one of my life verses that got me through high school and college (I particularly applied it to sports),but it is so applicable to marriage as well.
"But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your hard work will be rewarded." -2 Chronicles 15:7
Thanks Danielle! I can't wait until the marriage conference. At times I wonder why I worry so much with learning about marriage - it comes easier to us - then I know why. What you don't work at becomes weak. We have placed norms into our relationship and placed God first! We don't just have to apply this to our marriage, but life!
